Determinantes de diferencia

Los determinantes other y another hacen referencia a algo que es diferente, restante o suplementario. Se colocan antes de un nombre. The other es un caso especial y se emplea de manera diferente.

Other Nombres contables en plural y nombres incontables
Another Nombres contables en singular
The other Cualquier nombre que admita el artículo determinado "the"

Uso de "Other"

Other puede emplearse después de los determinantes some, any y no.

Ejemplos
  • Do you have other shoes?
  • There are other jobs you could try.
  • Is there any other bread?
  • I have some other sugar we could use.
  • We have no other ideas.

Cuando other se usa con un nombre contable en plural y alguno de dichos determinantes, el nombre puede omitirse si se entiende por el contexto; en tal caso, other toma forma de plural. Esto también puede ocurrir cuando other va solo, pero es más frecuente con some, any y no.

Ejemplos
  • Do you have any others?
  • I know some others who might like to come.
  • There are no others in this box.
  • I know others like vanilla, but I prefer chocolate.
  • She doesn't have to wear that dress. She has others.

Uso de "Another"

Another se emplea con nombres contables en singular. Con nombres incontables, another suele utilizarse con palabras en singular que indican medida.

Ejemplos

  • Have another cookie.
  • Would you like another cup of tea?
  • He has another brother.
  • I don't have another car.
  • I'll come by another time.

Uso de "The Other"

Si the other modifica un nombre contable en plural, tal nombre puede omitirse si se sobreentiende por el contexto. En este caso, other toma forma de plural.

  • Where is the other box of cereal?
  • I work on the weekend and go to school on the other days of the week.
  • May I use the other honey for my recipe?
  • I enjoyed the first book but I didn't read the other books in the series.
  • Have you seen the others?
  • Jim ate two cookies. I ate the others.
